Redskins Sign Paea and Jean-Francois

What?

DT Stephen Paea, DT Ricky Jean-Francois SIGNED by Washington

 Why?

Washington’s 3-4 scheme is going to stick around but the front seven will look very different this fall.  They are making the effort to re-tool up front, starting with Paea and Jean-Francois.  Coming in to the league, both were tweener types that many thought would fit better in to three technique type roles.  Paea is best suited for the DE spot in the 3-4 and while he is a nit undersized, he will offer a pass rush presence from that spot, something the team really needs.  Jean-Francois could play a versatile role like he did in San Francisco, lining up all over front trying to exploit matchups.  Both are fully capable of being three down defenders.

 What’s Next?

While these two are not traditional 3-4 guys, they will fit in well with what Washington is trying to do.  They want to be more active up front.  I still think they will pursue a bigger body to man the NT spot and if they do, this defensive line quickly becomes a strength.  In the draft they are primed for a bringing in one of their top edge rushers.  If you are a 3-4 defenses looking for OLBs, this is a great draft to be in the top 5 overall.
