New York Jets: 2017 NFL Draft Preview

O.J. Howard

Maccagnan wants more picks and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get them. If he’s forced to pick then he should do the smart thing and draft the safest player on his board – who should be O.J. Howard.

G.M. Mike Maccagnan has his work cut out for him. He’s made it known he wants to trade down on Thursday and unless safety Jamal Adams somehow falls to No. 6, he’s going to try everything in his power to get it done.

Key additions

  • C Jonotthan Harrison
  • CB Morris Claiborne
  • DL Mike Pennel
  • OT Kelvin Beachum
  • PK Chandler Catanzaro
  • QB Josh McCown
  • WR Quinton Patton

Key subtractions

  • C Nick Mangold
  • CB Darrelle Revis
  • OT Ryan Clady
  • OT Breno Giacomini
  • PK Nick Folk
  • QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
  • QB Geno Smith
  • WR Brandon Marshall

Priority needs (Offense)

QB…Until they find their franchise quarterback they should take one every year. There’s no chance the Jets will trade up for one and unless they trade down they’ll have to wait until pick 39 at the earliest.

RB…Bilal Powell proved he’s capable of extended playing time but he’s not a bell-cow type rusher. Veteran Matt Forte is around for at least one more season so Maccagnan doesn’t need one bad enough at this point to take a chance at six.

TE…O.J. Howard would be a great addition to help provide their young signal-callers with a quality match-up talent that’s been lacking around here for years. If they decide to pass on Howard it’s only a matter of time when a tight end is chosen this week.

WR…With Brandon Marshall gone and Eric Decker next on the list the Jets need to find a future No. 1.

Priority needs (Defense)

CB…Unless last year’s fourth-round pick Juston Burris develops into a solid starter and Mo Claiborne finds a home this position is a major issue.

LB…The Jets have been searching for a difference-making pass rusher for years since they switched to a 3-4 franchise under Bill Parcells. With David Harris nearing the end of a solid pro career, Maccagnan will need to find another inside player too.

Final analysis

Maccagnan wants more picks and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get them. If he’s forced to pick then he should do the smart thing and draft the safest player on his board who should be Howard. Even though he needs corners, Marshon Lattimore has limited experience and an injury history sure to remind Jets fans of Dee Milliner (and that’s not a good thing) so why not wait on that? Taking a quarterback at six could be a firing offense if that player ends up a bust and he has to understand that. A possible wild-card could be linebacker Reuben Foster. He has outstanding skills and would help bring a physical presence from that spot that this team sorely lacks. Keep in mind Maccagnan does have the Sheldon Richardson chip to sweeten any deal.

Top first-round options

  • CB Marshon Lattimore
  • LB Reuben Foster
  • QB Mitch Trubisky
  • RB Dalvin Cook
  • RB Leonard Fournette
  • SS Jamal Adams
  • TE O.J. Howard
