What?
OG Orlando Franklin SIGNED by San Diego
Why?
Classic move by a team that strengthens themselves while also weakening a division rival. Franklin comes over from Denver after proving to be an equally effective guard and tackle. The Chargers offensive line allowed 37 sacks in 2014 and with such an immobile mover in Rivers, the need for better pass protection is vital. Their presence up front was bottom tier as well, struggling to create movement at the point of attack and providing running lanes for their backs. Franklin will most likely play inside but he did spend three seasons as a tackle. Versatility along the OL is a big deal as injuries pile up.
What’s Next?
The Chargers may still look for a new left tackle in the draft, but this move creates a lesser sense of urgency to take an OL no matter what. As stated above, Rivers won’t avoid pressure very well and the running game needs more help from the big uglies. Franklin is chapter 1 of a two or three chapter book on improving that line.
